Meta Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Northern Lights Suggestion

Last week, Meta suggested that people should make northern lights using Meta AI if they missed the phenomenon. Meta suggested this idea on Threads and users had different reactions to this suggestion. Some people also shared their own AI generated images of aurora borealis but some people were fuming.

One user said that it is quite disrespectful for artists who captured real pictures of northern lights, while another agreed that this just shows how awful AI is. While some were thoughtfully critical, others were fuming in anger too. Some said how inconsiderate it is of Meta to post fake images of northern lights when everyone was enjoying real amazing photography of northern lights on their feeds.

One astro/particle physicist asked Meta how done deaf they are to waste their world-leading AI on something like such a rare event that people enjoyed in real time and took amazing photos of. Some people also shared real photos of northern lights to Meta to make it see how beautifully real photography can capture natural events. It just shows that Meta’s media team didn't know how to read the room and did something that society is questioning about most frequently– the ethics of using AI.
