Meta Confirms Moderation Failures On Instagram and Threads As Users Report Disappearing Accounts and Posts

Meta is scrambling to try and bring a major moderation failure on its popular Instagram and Threads app under control.

Adam Mosseri confirmed through a comment recently how users were complaining of the widespread disappearance of accounts and posts. He said Meta was well aware of the situation and trying to find a solution. Similarly, several other users spoke about how their posts were disappearing and making their experience on the platform miserable.

At the moment, the Instagram and Threads boss is replying to some user complaints directly when asked for an explanation of the situation. Many people spoke about how linking articles that were controversial in nature resulted in direct blocking or account deletion. They hope to figure out a solution soon as the team is currently looking into it.

In case you didn’t know, moderation continues to plague social media, time and time again. Advocates always fear apps are not doing enough to bring misinformation and harmful content under control. But this seems to be excessive in some cases. For instance, one user joked about dying online due to the scorching temperatures in her area. She was locked from her own account, even if it was for a short period.

Meanwhile, some creators are talking about adding fact-checks featuring political content errors. Other posts featuring weather alerts about the current hurricane system were also getting deleted or blocked. It’s almost like doing anything slightly controversial might get you locked out from the platform.

As per social media expert Matt Navarra, it’s amazing how Meta is taking this so lightly. His account on Threads was downranked for no good reason after he shared a real story about Tom Brady falling for a hoax linked to Meta AI. After complaining about the issue publicly, an explanation was provided to him by the app’s boss.

Some users are getting locked out of the platform because they’re mistakenly labeled as underage. Hence, they’re asked to show proof of their age through ID verification. But even when they do, their accounts still don’t get restored, even after a span of one month.

All this shows Meta is heavily relying on AI, meaning only a tiny fraction of moderation gets human attention. But don’t worry—AI’s lack of empathy ensures you’ll enjoy every inaccurate or absurd decision!
