Google Photos is working on a new feature that will be able to identify AI-generated images. Android app expert, Assemble Debug, says that Google Photos is going to have metadata tags in the future which help identify which software was used to create and edit images. The images that are generated with AI also have these tags. For example, if someone has created an image on Google Gemini, the metadata tag of the image will say Made with Google AI. The images which are made on ChatGPT often have the tag “DigitalSourceType.”
Right now, no images uploaded to Google Photos show AI tags. But the 7.3 version of Google Photos is likely to have “digital source type”, “ai info” and “credits” in their tags. These tags show that Google Photos is soon going to identify AI generated images.
Even with the addition of the tags, there is no saying whether spread of misinformation will be able to stop or not. Anyone can remove metadata tags after generating the image on AI software. But, metadata AI tags can be helpful if users want to search for AI generated images on Google Photos just like they search for any photo in their library. Nonetheless, it is a great initiative by Google to identify AI images as soon as it does it right. Meta has already faced some backlash after flagging some posts on their apps as AI though they weren’t.
