The rise of AI has changed all sectors of life, and it has hugely affected the tech and engineering sectors. According to Gartner, AI is going to affect 80% of the engineering sector. Gartner said that software engineers do not have to be worried that AI is going to take their jobs from them. But they need to upskill themselves so they can work along with AI. Senior Principal Analyst at Gartner, Philip Walsh, said that there have been a lot of talks about AI replacing human engineers. This is not very likely to happen anytime soon because human creativity and expertise is always needed. What these human engineers need to do is upskill themselves a bit so they can work along with artificial intelligence.
Gartner also talked about how AI is going to affect engineers in short as well as long terms. In the short term, artificial intelligence will be used by human engineers to increase their productivity. They will help engineers in already existing work patterns and tasks. In the mid term, AI is going to transform the work patterns of engineers and automate tasks. Most of the coding work will also be AI generated.
In the long term, we will see the demand for more skilled software engineers because organizations would need skilled engineers to work with the latest AI-empowered softwares. There will be a rise in AI engineering and AI engineers. An AI engineer will be someone who will have skills in software engineering, data science and machine learning. Gartner says that organizations will have to invest in AI development to keep up with these changes because AI integration will be important if an organization will need to stay in competition in the upcoming years.
