Apple Intelligence just got a mighty upgrade on the iOS 18.2 beta. This is the much-anticipated integration of ChatGPT that is accessible on other writing tools as well as voice assistant Siri.
A lot of concerns did arise in terms of what the tech giant was doing to protect the privacy of users. This is why the iPhone maker just rolled out detailed notes about privacy practices for the AI tool.
Apple confirms how the integration with the makers of ChatGPT puts users in control and enables them to fully consent to what they can and cannot share. Users can enable ChatGPT for Siri, writing tools, and any visual intelligence like Camera Control.
Users can ask the AI chatbot questions and also generate text and pictures. At any given moment in time, users are in full control of when the tool is in use, and in cases when their data is going to be used, the system will request consent before doing so.
Also, users can use the AI tool without having any account. Hence, if you’ve got a ChatGPT account, you can link that through this integration.
Before data is sent to the tool, users should enable the integration as it’s switched off by default. When a user enables it, they can send requests to Siri, writing platforms, and ChatGPT. At any given moment, users can disable the feature by entering settings and switching the turn-off button for ChatGPT.
When users begin to use Siri, their requests get analyzed to see if they’re asking the chatbot in particular for help or not. For instance, you can ask ChatGPT to write poems, and the requests are sent to the tool directly.
In cases when no explicit requests to use the feature get generated, the system analyzes to see if ChatGPT could prove to be useful in this scenario. If yes, Siri asks if you’d like to use ChatGPT. If you select yes, a request goes to ChatGPT and your reply to the query arrives directly. The same is the case for integrating the AI chatbot with other platforms like Writing Tools and Camera Control.
Users can select which content to send to ChatGPT. In cases when users wish to access the feature without accounts, only a request is sent with any attachments of a document to ChatGPT. No data goes to OpenAI linked to your account on Apple. Similarly, the user's IP address gets obscured. However, the location is provided when enabling the feature to stop fraud and comply with laws in place that prevent data for training AI.
When using ChatGPT through your account, you can sign in first. Those who are subscribers access the paid features. After logging in, all of the settings you’ve selected for your OpenAI account will be applicable. So this means the tool can use data for training or bettering models.
As far as which data is provided to Apple is concerned, it’s all related to your requests and queries forwarded. The same goes for the replies that the chatbot generates, the size of requests, and any other data linked to preventing fraud.
In cases when ChatGPT is used in Siri, Apple will be at the data collection end for users’ requests.
