Hundreds of TikTok employees are in danger of getting fired after its parent firm ByteDance opts to shift more towards AI.
The report was first published on the matter by Reuters who said the country’s workforce in Malaysia will be impacted the most by this news. Furthermore, the cuts will not be affecting any workforce located in the US, the leading social media giant confirmed.
For now, no exact figure for workers in danger was released but it did mention that it would not be more than 500. The changes are a part of the company’s ongoing efforts to try and ensure their content moderation teams are at par with standards, a rep from TikTok explained. They hope to make millions of dollars worth of investments in their trust and safety division this year. The goal is to better the efficacy of efforts as 80% of violative content gets deleted by automated means.
At the moment, TikTok is using automated means for detection. Human moderators will examine all shared material on the app. However, in modern times, TikTok wants to lean more on automated tech as compared to manpower.
The latest array of cuts comes after a number of cuts from the workforce this year. We then saw the firm fire close to 250 people in Ireland and the following month, it spoke about firing thousands from its marketing and operations division. During this year’s start, the company fired 60 workers linked to its advertising and sales.
The news is proof that the fears related to growing AI demand are real. Workers are getting replaced by technology and this continues to be a major debate.
