YouTube Confirms ‘Pause Ads’ Are Rolling Out For Its Television App

During the start of this month, several users spotted a new ‘Pause Ads’ option for the YouTube TV app. Now, we can confirm that this is indeed rolling out for the masses.

YouTube made the confirmation recently where it explained how the ‘Pause Ads’ feature was launching to all advertisers after receiving a strong response during the testing period. This means both advertisers and viewers showed a positive sign of approval.

This means if you’re an avid YouTube TV app user, you can see ads when you select an option to pause the video. Before, the app did speak about the possibility of combining ads into a paused screen but that did not take place, and neither was any timeline provided.

Now, it looks like pause ads are finally rolling out for a few people and slowly expanding to all.

Many users took to the X and Reddit app to express how surprised they were with the news while others didn’t hesitate in terms of sharing what the feature looked like on the app when ads appeared during a pause period.

The format is already incorporated into some cable channels as well as streaming options. You will see the ad put on the right side of any content paused while that remains static. Moreover, there is also an option for Sponsored Tag featured on the top with buttons tagged ‘info’ at the bottom. It’s quite similar in layout and design to Twitch seen on a vertical side of the banner ads. Whenever a livestream pops up without blocking live content, you get to see this on the Twitch app.

For now, YouTube only puts the advertising banner on the right-hand side but we might see it use QR codes from brands as well. Scanning this code might show users more data about products, services, and ad offers.

The streaming industry will see this as a new means of gaining revenue as it’s already very common with a series of apps like Peacock, Hulu, Variety, and Max. We are seeing them launch on several ad-supported plans and the industry hopes such models can continue to grow without making subscribers upset.

So far, we’ve seen Roku exploring the option for pause ads as mentioned in a patent filing made during the year’s start.
