Meta Agrees To Provide Disclosures About Personal Data Use For AI Training In Brazil

Meta’s latest privacy policy regarding personal data use for AI training purposes was rejected in Brazil. However, the decision was soon overturned after the company agreed to provide disclosures to citizens.

This means Meta Platforms will now inform users how their personal data is going to be used after a demand was made by Brazil’s top watchdog for data protection.

Users in Brazil will get more warnings beginning Tuesday. This will arrive in the form of emails and alerts through social media apps Facebook and Instagram. In case a user does not agree or wish to give consent, they can reject the demand, Meta confirmed in a new statement.

The watchdog which goes by the name ANPD suspended Meta’s latest privacy policy, shortly after its launch in July this year. Seeing it overturn that call was shocking to some but it confirmed that it was only done after Meta’s agreement for issuing disclosures.

We similarly saw the tech giant suspend using Generative AI tools in the country which included those used to design AI stickers for WhatsApp. That was a major blow for Meta, considering the country has the second-largest user base for the popular texting platform.

During that time, Meta issued a statement about the tool's suspension. It confirmed that they were carrying out deliberations with the regulatory watchdog and would address any concerns they might have over using generative AI.

As confirmed by Reuters yesterday, Meta just reaffirmed that it was still carrying out talks. This means the suspension is still in place and a final verdict is yet to be reached for suspension removal.
