Majority of Americans Still Turn To Social Media To Get News Insights, New Study Confirms

The US Elections are just weeks away and it might seem like the most appropriate time to have a study that talks about the role of social media and news.

Interestingly, you’ll be amazed to learn that most users in the US still turn to social media to get their daily dose of news from around the globe. They enjoy reading the latest trends and beyond, staying informed with a click of a button.

Thanks to Pew Research, we found out more about how social media keeps on playing a critical role in terms of news consumption and how 54% of American adults continue to get more insights from these apps.

While the issue in this regard has to do with misinformation and plenty of conspiracy theories taking center stage, it’s not uncommon to see viral stories on these platforms get amplified for no good reason. They are filled with bias and work through manipulation and therefore it’s difficult to know the truth and what is false. Remember, social media algorithms work uniquely and you might not be aware of how much false data you’re being fed with.

Today, there are so many new techniques for checking on facts like X’s Community Notes that are designed to counter misinformation. This helps to detect hoaxes on a large scale and ensure false reports are kept minimally. But despite these efforts, bad actors continue to take center stage and it’s hard to decipher right from wrong. Some angles and stories must benefit people’s interests and that’s why they are so popular.

You don’t know who you can trust online and several different news outlets are there trying to provide context to updates. But that’s not always successful. They are misleading. So is that a good thing that a lot of Americans attain some news from social media platforms?

It’s actually not easy to avoid at all. Seeing the growing rise of social media in modern life, it’s hard to provide trust and there are no measures of faith in terms of what’s right and wrong.

As per the survey, 59% of users get news from online sources like these apps, and a similar share of users spoke about the same on social media apps like Truth Social. Close to half of TikTok users speak about getting news from the app which is close to a 43% rise from the past.
