It looks like the US has some fierce competition in the world of 5G handsets. India just replaced the US, taking second place amid a 20% YoY growth of shipments during the first half of this year.
While China continues to lead the race, it’s amazing to see a country like India replace the US, thanks to growing demand in usage for 5G handsets. This came with more availability of these handsets that were cost-friendly.
The huge rise in shipments for vivo, Samsung, and more budget-friendly brands was said to be behind the growth trend as competition heats up. Other global markets also saw a similar growth trend for this year, as confirmed by Counterpoint Market Monitor’s study today.
A lot of citizens in these countries are switching to 5G as upgrades on their system devices including cheaper segments.
As far as the fastest growing market is concerned, the CALA, or Caribbean and Latin region won the race with a record-breaking 63% growth YoY. This was mostly thanks to several countries that account for the biggest userbase like Brazil and Mexico.
As a whole, the CALA region was included in the 14% global net trend report even though it stood just at 6% for 5G shipments during H1 this year. Meanwhile, it was the Asia Pacific region that accounted for 63% of the total global net and 58% of shipments.
Growth was also seen in the Middle East, Africa, and European regions where doubt digit figures were recorded for 5G shipments.
The brand to lead the 5G shipments around the globe was Apple which contributed to 25% of the overall share, thanks to the rise in shipments for its iPhone 14 and 15 range. No surprise for the second position as it was South Korean tech giant Samsung. Its Galaxy A series and S24 launch were the most popular variants. Third place went to Xiaomi and India was the bigger market leader for the brand, attaining a massive triple-digit growth in the country while double-digit growth for other regions.
India was also responsible for the major growth of vivo, alongside China and other leading economies of Asia. Meanwhile, the fastest growing brand was Motorola in both India, MEA, and the North American side.
As far as what the near-term future looks like for 5G handset shipments, the study’s director explained how 5G handsets have already crossed the 54% mark for H1 this year. This is the first time that figures went above 50% and the trend is expected to only get bigger and stronger with time.
The addition of premium models will further give rise to more growth for 5G networks and as per the latest market outlook, 5G share will go beyond 57% this year and most likely cross 65% by 2025.
