Google Discover’s Traffic Exceeds Google Search For Some Publishers, New Study Proves

When you’re in the publishing industry and based in the US, you may have noticed how social media traffic tends to fall, time and time again. But the real question on people’s minds is how frequently that happens.

Thanks to experts at Chartbeat, we got to know about something very interesting. And that’s related to Google Discover’s share. Interestingly, it managed to go above and beyond Google Search. That’s certainly an eye-opener that not a lot of people had predicted.

Meanwhile, Chartbeat also showed that traffic to nearly 700 American news sites fell by a third when compared to the start of last year. To be more specific, it went down from 6% to 4% for all kinds of traffic.

Search traffic continues to dominate and is described as steady during this time, the head for sales at Chartbeat adds.

Now Google Discover is the tech giant’s platform for personal content recommendations through mobile apps. It’s increasingly become a leading referrer, going up by 13% since the start of last year. Again, the product is new and not something we see or talk about frequently.

It’s completely based on mobile and so many users feel it’s linked to the Google app or if and when they open new tabs, the company keeps experimenting with where they need to place it.

Discover is also getting popular as your go-to news coverage app. It includes all sorts of breaking news updates and can streamline to direct news platforms. For instance, it’s one of the biggest sources of traffic referrals today, going beyond regular searches.

Google’s guidance for Discover is quite sparse and many experts did note that they like to experiment with what they feel works the most. For now, the BBC is testing publishing at various times of the day to see what can become a hit and what turns into a miss.

Meanwhile, what is not working too well is a strong SEO platform as it does not translate to success on the Discover platform. Stories having hyperbolic headlines do not appear to perform too well here either.

The platform discourages the use of means for manipulation by catering to outrage and just plain curiosity. For now, it seems like trying to find out the right headlines to work is what might tick on the platform and publishers need to see what’s right through guess and error.
