Pro-Palestinian supporters will be happy to learn that their popular slogan "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," does not go against the Meta’s content policy.
Meta’s Oversight Board made the breakthrough decision recently which means the slogan can be used on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and other platforms without fear of being censored or removed.
For those who might not be aware, this slogan was always used as an outcry to demand justice against the genocide carried out by Israel’s military brutes against innocent Palestinians. It’s been considered a cry for help against oppression since the war in Gaza and West bank began.
Israel has been opposed to its use as it felt those using the slogan were showing anti-semitism behavior but after Meta’s decision, it seems like a clear victor for Palestine supporters.
Meta’s Oversight Board is a part of the company but always makes its decisions independently. They’ve been reviewing a lot of cases that come for content moderation featuring this phrase and it seems like it’s finally been given the green light for use worldwide.
The board also confirmed that such content doesn’t go against its hate speech regulations or promote violence. They also confirmed that any posts featuring the slogan will not be removed or considered for possible removal in the future.
The decision was made after the majority of the board voted unanimously to favor the slogan. Many also declared that it could have all types of meanings and be used in different contexts. Therefore, simply removing it was no longer going to be the case anymore.
It also added how the main purpose was to show solidarity with those suffering in the Gaza conflict. It’s about the exact geographical site seen between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. This entails Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank.
It’s usually used to support the people of Palestine who demand to be recognized so they can get equal rights. Many also see this slogan as the solution to end the conflict taking place for decades between Jews and Palestinians in the region.
However, there are a lot of people who don’t feel the same way. Most Jews and Israelis consider the phrase a call to end the Jewish state and get rid of Israel.
Some members of the board agreed to the above statement but they were not the majority, only a few.
Despite this decision, it's crucial to recognize that Facebook has consistently shadow banned and suppressed pro-Palestinian voices and creators for years. While the Oversight Board has finally ruled in favor of the slogan, it's a delayed move that should have come much sooner. Meta's actions appear to have prioritized appeasing stakeholders, once again placing the company on the wrong side of history.
