Apple’s Launch of iPhone 16 May Be A ‘Golden Upgrade Cycle’ But The Company Failed To Address Plans For China

Apple’s highly anticipated Glowtime Event just took place in the US on Monday. This is where the new iPhone 16 was launched alongside a lot of discussion about Apple Intelligence and the partnership with OpenAI.

While the company did share a lot of insights about its future plans and what users can expect, it still left many hanging about where it stands with China. In case you did not know, that is one of the tech giant’s biggest userbase markets.

We’ve seen in the recent past how sales have significantly dropped in the country, giving Apple a massive blow to its global revenue. Moreover, it has been confirmed that the partnership with OpenAI will not roll out in the country but it might be in the talks with another local AI firm.

iPhone sales struggled big time in China this year and the future does not look too bright either. While analysts are calling this launch to be a golden upgrade cycle, we’re not too sure if that stands true, considering many were left in the dark about what its next strategy is to tackle Greater China.

iPhone 16 was flaunted in all of its glory with the best AI capabilities. Executives gave promising speeches but again, no mention of the massive Chinese market was made. Remember that massive fall in sales is what has investors concerned. Apple was once the leader in China but that seems to be fading out as local competitors continue to take over the top spot.

This is the second quarter where we’ve seen Apple fall out of the top five list for smartphone shipments in the country. And while a lot of praise came from experts who think the latest AI smartphone from Apple could make things better, the deal with ChatGPT is not launching in that part of the world.

The US gets Apple Intelligence in October but consumers in China will get it by 2025. Moving on to the latest iPhone model preorders, these will come by September 20. iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 while Pro Max begins at $1199. However, the question remains. Will Chinese buyers get in line to buy a device that is missing the biggest AI selling point? We don’t think so!

As mentioned in the past, Apple is on the lookout for other local partners to work with for Apple Intelligence so China can benefit. Now the question is when the feature would launch. Some speculations are linked to Baidu being the company of choice to make it all happen but we’re not sure when.

Baidu will reportedly fill the void linked to the AI puzzle in China’s market. Still, the country’s local smartphone competitors are working hard to stop Apple from taking the lead. Even after the launch of the iPhone 16, Huawei rolled out its phone, Mate XT. interestingly, it would be rolled out on the same day as iPhone 16. How’s that for some serious competition?

Apple might be seeing a slip in sales for smartphones in China but the same cannot be said for local tech giants. In fact, Huawei saw its sales go up 69% during the first three months of this year.

The company’s launch of the world’s first tri-fold device called Mate XT had people rushing to preorder it. It got 2 million preorders in just a few hours after the launch. Now that is record-breaking.

Whatever the case may be, the latest iPhone 16 is being hailed as a true game changer in the world of tech. We will need to wait and watch how far preorders go starting September 20 and if it can beat out China’s biggest smartphone rival.
