Linda Yaccarino of X just confirmed the company's bold measures to counteract the growing number of boycotts against it.
On Tuesday, X filed a lawsuit against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media and the World Federation for Advertisers.
The news came in the form of a post published through X. This is where Yaccarino accused different companies of initiating a plan to boycott the app. Amongst those tagged included Mars, Unilever, CVS Health, and Orsted.
She quoted a report from July that spoke about how large entities and corporations took part in boycotts to enable demonetization of apps. News agencies, podcasts, and different kinds of content were also a part of the list. Moreover, any content disapproved by these groups was not allowed to be monetized.
The CEO called the behavior of eliminating content unjust as viewers were restricted from seeing content they disfavored.
The GARM alliance first came into existence in 2019 by the WFA. Their goal was to assist the industry in overcoming any challenges related to illegal content on digital apps. Furthermore, the platforms providing harmful content were stopped from making money through ads.
The report highlighted by the X CEO specifically talks about boycotts of their platform.
One member as per this report suggested how fellow members stopped paying for advertisements related to this service and contributed to a major drop in revenue. More analysis proved how an internal investigation by GARM had it questioning Twitter’s status and possible boycotts. It also entailed discussions surrounding Musk’s command of the app. As one can expect, the chances of a boycott were even greater now than before.
As a result of these boycotts, Yaccarino highlighted how it cost X billions in loss. For two years, the company let it go but as per the X CEO, not anymore.
What is Elon Musk’s response on this front? He also expressed great dismay and never got the response he was looking for. Instead, he talks about empty words and blackmailing attempts.
At that time, Musk promised to document anyone taking part in this boycott in great detail.
Now, this latest antitrust lawsuit comes at a time when the government is cracking down against antitrust in the world of tech. As a refresh, Google lost the court battle that accused it of behaving as a search monopoly illegally.
