Meta’s Threads app (a Twitter/X rival) had a great start, hitting the 100 million active users mark in October of 2023.
This was right before it struck the 130 million users mark in February of 2024. Considering it was just seven months into the launch, it attained 150 million in April. And then we saw the platform reached the 175 million target in the start of July 2024. And today Instagram's head Adam Mosseri boasted that they have "crossed the 200M milestone" on Threads app.
When we do consider the averages, it’s not wrong to say how this all means one thing. The platform has been adding 7.5 million new users every month between the periods of October and February. This again rose to 9 million monthly active users in the last 5 months.
In the past four weeks, Threads added close to 25 million more monthly active users. This means that the app really grew in terms of momentum by nearly three times the figure predicted. If that’s not a positive indicator of the great potential that this platform possesses then we’re not quite sure what is.
But what is leading to the growth in the first place?
Some believe it has to do with the upcoming US elections. While Meta does seem to be averted to the world of politics, the events continue to be discussed online. Remember, Biden has opted to withdraw and instead promote Kamala Harris on this front.
This kind of change has given rise to a new kind of vitriol and the traction forces are greater on the X app. Then we saw Donald Trump’s assassination attempt take place again had people talking, not to mention Elon Musk endorsing Trump publicly as the country’s next commander-in-chief.
This could have pushed more people away from the X platform and therefore head on over to Meta’s Threads. Then we saw the arrival of the Olympics in Paris which again had people talking and debating on issues in real-time, which again had trends surging upwards on the app.
More and more commentators are publishing on the Threads platform and that causes more intrigue and further gain in momentum as the venue for discussion keeps on altering.
The growth increase is greater by three times and it’d be amazing to witness when Threads hit that 250 million mark for monthly active users.
We still feel Threads still happens to be far off in terms of usage of the X app as the latter has a user base of 250 million DAU and 500 million participants every month. Clearly, Threads is just 40% of that seen on X but it’s still a major difference. Momentum is the real indicator here for this stage.
The tide clearly might be going in Thread's favor and as this app keeps adding more features and elements of discovery, it could really fan out the flame.
We still cannot be sure of anything until and unless the app hits the next milestone for usage. And if that does happen quicker, like in the upcoming few months, we bet Musk is going to roll out some strange stats about active user nanoseconds to reaffirm that his app still has the lead over all others.
Now if this momentum keeps rising, it’s going to get more clear than ever how this platform is the place for all to be. It’s a great domain to post in real-time for users through different social media apps. Remember, people tend to lean in the direction where chats are taking place and right now, it’s Threads.
