Google Launches More Election-Related Guardrails For YouTube, Search, Google Play, And AI

As the US inches closer to the presidential elections, tech giant Google is making sure no stone is left unturned in terms of controlling misinformation.

The company issued more guardrails for all of its platforms including YouTube, AI tools, Google Play, and Search to help keep misinformation at bay. This is in addition to the safety measures it rolled out last year.

The app will also include information panels above the usual search results for several election candidates, it confirmed for YouTube. Now, users will see basic details highlighted to a specific candidate having links to political parties and more related to search.

The Android maker also spoke about including panels to link a certain individual’s official page.

The elections are scheduled to begin on November 5 and as we get closer, the YouTube app’s homepage will include reminders on where a person can vote and how to vote.

Google Search will also feature more resources for registering voters from various election offices. The company hopes to source more accurate data thanks to a partnership with Democracy Works. This is a non-profit and works with different companies to assist voters whenever they can.

The Google Play Store will also feature new badges that speak about apps linked to different government agencies. Similarly, users can make the most of a new help document for developers that delineates requirements for apps.

Any app that gets the stamp of approval from the Play Store will get the official endorsement that’s seen on Google Play. However, that can only happen after submission of the necessary forms.

Google is also making sure its Generative AI products do not get out of hand. They are prone to hallucinations and it could give rise to more election restrictions. This is why AI will get more ad disclosures when ads are made using AI.

Meanwhile, content labels for AI content and watermarks for AI-generated video, audio, images, and text are also on the cards. While it was first solely restricted to the Gemini chat assistant, it will also apply to AI Overviews on Search and AI summaries on YouTube Live sessions. The same will be the case for Gems which is the latest customized chatbot and Gemini’s new image generator.
