Apple’s Safari Rolls Out Handy Distraction Control Feature For Websites

Apple's Safari has just rolled a much needed feature called Distraction Control.

As can be imagined by the name, the feature gets rid of any distracting elements seen on a particular website that the user approaches. The feature is in line with the rollout by Arc Brower in 2023 where its Boosts enabled users to get rid of certain elements from a page and go about customizing it to their liking.

The iPhone maker is launching the early variant of this feature this week via the latest developer betas for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and even its macOS Sequoia.

In this way, users get the chance to access the tool through the menu option on the main page where the smart search is present.

The item would be selected from the page they visited and wish to remove. Moreover, the browser will ensure it remembers the users’ selection and hence the same command will arise the next time they visit the same site. How cool is that?

The choices are not syncing across different hardware just yet so that means users would need to disguise the elements on every new device.

Users could click on the blue colored Hide icon seen in the search field and then click on Show Hidden Items to unhide any elements on that particular webpage.

Apple further mentioned that such a feature wouldn’t get rid of ads or sections that keep altering content. For now, it’s not quite clear if such a tool could remove a particular section like ‘who to follow’ or ‘explore’ on the X app but such elements do arise in the same position as the home page. It’s just that the content present inside boxes is of a more dynamic nature.

In the past, the Boost rollout by Arc Browser could get rid of sections during the experimental phase in 2023.

With the latest launch of the tool on iOS 18, Apple also gave way to an enhanced reader for greater listening capabilities and controls for the font. The iPhone maker also made way for its Highlights feature that would display important details from certain pages such as fast links that display information quicker on a page like driving instructions, movie reviews, or even data about calls. Everything would be mentioned on that particular page for users’ ease.
