YouTube Fails To Remove Explicit NSFW Ads Despite Vowing To Take Action

Video streaming giant YouTube has failed to combat its problem of NSFW ads featuring explicit-themed content on the app.

If you’re an avid user of the platform, we bet you’ve noticed how such ads keep popping up, time and time again. The company has been facing the issue for a while now and its representatives keep making promises on how they’re working hard to get rid of them. Moreover, the app confirmed how such acts go against its own policy but it’s alarming how they’re still visible and to a great extent.

The latest news comes to us from Android Authority who just confirmed how adult ads were published for a platform dubbed Mitha. A lot of users confirmed how it was visible to them and it can now be confirmed that the issue continues to pop up as we speak.

So many reports were generated on how the company is failing to take action but Google claimed that these actors were able to evade being detected and therefore bypassed the app’s long list of monitoring measures. It’s not like the app is doing nothing but seeing the issue arise time and time again means it’s never been tackled correctly.

The ongoing battle had more ads showing up in June of this year but still, the company’s spokesperson confirmed that despite the claims being made, the app immediately removes any ad displaying such explicit material.

YouTube rolled out stats including a list of how many ads it blocked in 2023 alone and that hit the 5.5B mark and nearly 94M of those featured adult material.

It’s quite clear that advertisers are doing their best to exploit the app’s vulnerabilities regarding NSFW ad detection and promotion of sexual material online. While the app ended up suspending close to 12M advertiser accounts in 2023, it’s clear that some seriously robust measures are required.

The efforts of the company could be enhanced by the use of AI and large language models that really make it easier to hinder advertisers from working discreetly to publish such content online.

YouTube seems to have no real solution to the problem. It just repeats its own words by claiming such material is against its policy but when questions are thrown about how such ads are ruining users’ viewing experience, they have no reply on what more can be done to evade the situation.

We saw parent company Google’s earnings report for Q2 of 2024 where the app produced a whopping $8.6B revenue this time around. And in case you did not know, this accounts for a huge chunk of the overall $64B advertising revenue of Google in the second quarter.

But with that being said, the huge presence of these types of ads on the app is a major risk to the company’s revenue stream as unhappy users could result in a loss of advertisers with time.
