Report Shows PC and Communication Devices Use the Most Semiconductor Chips

Data from Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) 2024 Factbook shows that most of the semiconductor chips which were purchased in 2023 are being used in PC and Communicative devices. Semiconductors are used in a lot of things like computers, smartphones and other appliances. Moreover, they are also used in manufacturing of automobiles and the robotic sector.

In the PC, semiconductors are used in a lot of parts like data centers and computer memory. In communicative devices, they are used in smartphones, tablets and other wireless devices.

The vast majority of semiconductor demand is driven by products ultimately purchased by consumers, such as laptops, smartphones, automobiles, and more. Increasingly, consumer demand is driven in emerging markets including those in Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa.

In 2023, $527 billion or 57% of sales of semiconductors were from PC and communicative devices. 17% of sales were from automobiles and 14% of sales were attributed to industries. 11% of the semiconductor sales were done by consumer electronics.

The SIA market saw a downfall in sales in 2023 as compared to 2022. $574 were made in sales in 2022, while there was an 8% decrease seen in 2023. Semiconductor industry in the USA shares 50.2% of total market revenue. Meanwhile, 70% of 300mm wafers are manufactured in South Korea, China and Taiwan although its sales are handled in the USA.
