A Stack Overflow report reveals the growing impact of generative AI on software development, based on responses from over 65,000 developers in 185 countries. AI tool usage among developers increased to 76% in 2024, up from 70% in 2023. Despite this rise, favorability towards AI tools decreased from 77% to 72%.
The report highlights that 81% of developers experience increased productivity from AI tools, and many see AI as a means to expand the developer community rather than replace developers. However, trust in AI tools is a concern, with only 43% of respondents trusting their accuracy. Key issues include misinformation (79%), missing data (65%), and bias (50%).
Stack Overflow's role is critical, offering accurate, sourced content and leveraging partnerships with Google Cloud and OpenAI to enhance AI tool effectiveness. The decline in favorability is attributed to varied user experiences with generative AI tools and their effectiveness.
