It looks like OpenAI is all set to provide competition in the world of search.
The company just unveiled its latest SearchGPT platform that could give a challenging front to not only startup entities like Perplexity but other giants including Bing and Google.
The unveiling was done on Thursday where the company shed light on the latest search feature that could provide users with quick answers to their questions that are drawn through sources on the web.
When we look at it from the UI perspective, this tool is not too far from what’s on offer by ChatGPT. Users type in questions and the SearchGPT would serve greater information and images taken from the internet, alongside a host of links related to relevant sources online. This is the point where users could also ask some follow-up queries or search for more related queries through the sidebar.
Certain searches take into consideration the users’ location. In the latest support documents from the firm, the company highlights how SearchGPT gathers and shares general location data from search providers belonging to third parties as this would better the accuracy of results. Similarly, the tool would enable users to provide specific data on location through a new toggle button present on the settings menu.
The latest offering is powered by OpenAI’s models including GPT 3.5, 4, and 4o. For now, the AI giant is referring to it as a prototype and it’s up for grabs for a limited number of users and publishers. Furthermore, the company hopes to incorporate a few features of this tool into its already popular ChatGPT tool shortly.
OpenAI shared a blog post on this front including how it might take a lot of effort from the users’ end to find exactly what they’re searching for online. Sometimes, several attempts are needed to get the right answer.
Therefore, this is the reason why it is now bettering the conversational capabilities of models with data in real time taken online. This would find exactly what users are looking for at a faster pace and also ensure it happens with ease.
For a while now, many of us have been hearing about speculations related to OpenAI setting its eyes on Google’s top spot in the world of search. There were even rumors about a possible pilot that was in the making in February of this year.
However, some critics don’t think that the launch of this tool is coming at the most ideal time. Remember, so many AI tools are already under fire for giving incorrect information, providing content cannibalism, and also for simple plagiarism.
Did we mention how Google’s own AI Overviews were slammed for generating replies like adding glue to pizza so toppings would stay on top? Issues with Perplexity also grew when it managed to rip off news-related content produced by other top tech giants like Forbes and CNBC without any credit.
We just hope OpenAI has learned a lesson or two in terms of what others went through and therefore can ensure more responsible behavior in this new SearchGPT endeavor.
