In what many people are describing as a shocking turn of events, former US president Donald Trump is letting the world know that he’s not in favor of a TikTok ban.
The Republican leader who is all set to contest this year’s elections mentioned how he shows full support for the popular social media platform, despite a possible ban in the US.
For those who might not be aware, the app’s parent firm based in China, ByteDance, was told to separate from the platform if it wished to function in the country. For that, it was given a restricted timeframe to do so.
But TikTok did make it very clear that it would be more keen on being banned than ever considering a sellout of its assets to other Americans.
Trump further explained that he was firmly ground on his decision because the market requires competition and when you’ve got leading social media apps at your disposal like Instagram. Facebook, Snap, and others - healthy competition can only flourish when the best of what the world has to offer is at users’ disposal.
Speaking to media outlet Bloomberg on this front, Trump mentioned during the interview that he did previously refer to the platform as a huge threat to America but then chose to join the app last month in June so that’s when things started to turn.
For a while now, Trump has slammed Meta Platforms for banning him for a whopping two years after the deadly Capitol Riot incident.
TikTok is yet to comment on the subject. As head of the country in the past, we know very well how Trump was one of the biggest critics of TikTok and made huge moves to have the app banned in 2021 but that failed to come to light after the decision had been blocked by the country’s courts.
Then in the summer of 2021, Biden’s administration withdrew a long list of executive orders to ban TikTok and WeChat that came about during Trump’s era as president.
For those who might not be aware, Donald Trump holds a major share in the Trump Media & Tech group that functions his Truth Social. As a whole, Trump Media has close to a $7B market cap, even though it generated a massive quarterly revenue figure of $770k and if you want to better comprehend its large scale, it’s the equivalent of two big Starbucks shops.
Then in September, the American Appeals Court held several arguments related to many legal challenges linked to a new regulation that forced Bytedance to break from TikTok’s US assets to be banned.
The final hearing will ultimately decide the app’s fate and that’s all set to take place for a mighty showdown, just weeks before the American elections arise.
Biden did transform the bill into a law to ban TikTok into law in April of this year, causing an outcry amongst pro-TikTok supporters in the country. He justified the act by adding how Chinese ownership of TikTok needed to end if it wished to function in the country.
