A series of bombshell files have been revealed that speak about how the government of Israel ended up taking part in a series of measures to try and impact the high-stakes lawsuit entailing Pegasus spyware.
The Israeli officials were said to be involved in the high profile legal case where they issued threats that could unveil some top secrets about the world-famous and notorious hacking endeavor.
Officials went as far as to seize a series of documents regarding the spyware from its respective manufacturer too, the NSO Group mentioned. This was done to stop the firm from being compliant with a host of demands made by the WhatsApp group in terms of handing over data regarding the invasive tech.
More papers are suggesting how the respective seizures were linked to a master plan rolled out by the government of Israel to stop disclosing data regarding Pegasus as the government felt this might lead to major diplomatic and security issues in the nation.
Pegasus allowed NSO customers to have their devices infected with the likes of software that extracts texts and images while recording calls and discreetly activating microphones. Amongst the list of clients included those hailing from democratic nations and authoritarian groups while the tech was related to human rights abusive incidents.
Since the start of battling this lawsuit in the US in 2019, the NSO has been busy battling this case in the US that was brought about by the WhatsApp group. The case accuses the Israel-based organization of using vulnerabilities inside the messaging service so that it could target 1400 users in 20 different countries. This would arise over two weeks but this whole time, the NSO denied all the accusations thrown in its direction.
Getting rid of so many files and computers from the NSO offices starting in July 2020 is giving light to a new relationship between the NSO and Israel’s government in terms of how much they overlap in their interests.
The July 2020 incidents only arose after officials in Israel seemed to be involved in discussions related to replies to WhatsApp’s requests to have NSO reveal internal files regarding this spyware. It further raised queries on their coordination to hide some information from legal proceedings being conducted in the country.
