Keeping tabs on different trends in the tech industry can be a difficult phenomenon.
But thanks to AppFigures Intelligence, we’ve got expert advice on a key trend that all software developers and app/game creators must be aware of in 2024.
There might be plenty but as per the experts, you need to know that downloads are moving down while revenue happens to be on the rise.
The simplest means to look at the big picture is by glancing over the market at a macro level with assistance from the new Mobile Download Index as well as the Mobile Revenue Index.
As per results seen last week, the Mobile Revenue Index for American App Stores struck 473 while that observed with Google Play was much less, hitting the 262.9 mark. But the same couldn’t be said for downloads.
The American App Store’s download index for smartphones sat at 70.9 while Google Play’s was just 61.2 and in case you did not know, it’s extremely low.
Both these indexes are used for tracking the performance of leading apps and then making comparisons to a certain past point in time. Those index figures which are above 100 signify growth and those below 100 are clear indicators of decline.
So if we had to define it simply, revenue is moving up and downloads are going down. Seeing index values over a certain moment in time can signal how the trend is consistent with one top exception due to the pandemic (the year 2020).
The data is very particular to America but the trend can be seen for indexes belonging to other nations and it’s a common pattern seen elsewhere.
A few nations including the likes of Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and more do show growth in downloads and revenue but these countries only began sprouting a while back.
As a whole, those nations have a much less volume but India is a huge exception, thanks to its mega population and growing access to mobile phones including Android devices.
So what does this really mean for markets and developers? It’s a clear sign of app or platform growth. It’s the trend that needs to be observed the most closely. Fewer downloads and a huge figure of apps means working harder to attain every download. And yes, optimization at the App Stores does make a huge difference as does ad spending and onboarding optimization.
