A Faulty Update from CrowdStrike Caused an Outage in IT Systems All Around the World

Yesterday, there was a global IT outage which was caused by a faulty software update from CrowdStrike. Several businesses all around the world have been affected by this outage and many people are wondering how an outage of one software can have such a drastic impact globally. The simple answer is that CrowdStrike is used by almost every big and small company around the world.

CrowdStrike is a security software that is used to prevent any ransomware attacks and suspicious activities in IT companies. Many airline companies like Delta, United and American Airlines also cannot operate without CrowdStrike so they had no options but to ground their flights. Many news channels were also off air and retailers were unable to accept online payments. This shows that many corporations depend on CrowdStrike for functioning.

The outage happened when CrowdStrike was about to have a software update but ended up with a malfunction which caused crashes and disruptions in computer systems. Fixing this crash is going to take a while because it has to happen physically instead of automatically. There is a temporary workaround where many machines are working in safe mode.
