The use of ChatGPT or other forms of generative AI in the writing process is a contentious issue at best. Some say that it makes the process of writing out a given piece of content more efficient, but in spite of the fact that this is the case, many would claim that it is similar to plagiarism in some way, shape or form. It turns out that a big chunk of writers on Upwork are using AI according to a study by OriginalityAI.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that 24.11% of all of the articles written by writers on Upwork turned out to be AI generated. This is based on an analysis of 647 articles written by freelancers on the platform, and the number was as high as 37% for writers charging between $10 and $19 per hour.
For those who charge between $20 and $29 per hour, 23.18% of articles were detected to be written by AI with all things having been considered and taken into account. The proportion was even higher for the $30 to $39 per hour bracket with 25.52%, and higher still for $40 to $49 with 33.03%. As for writers charging between $50 and $59 per hour, the proportion was found to be 19.53%, and then just 5% for those who charge $60 or more.
It bears mentioning that 60% of the cover letters written on Upwork were made via AI, which just goes to show how prevalent the tech has become. Many users might not like this trend because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up leading to low quality content, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going away anytime soon.
As if that wasn't enough, 41% of cover letters got a whopping 100% AI generated rating. It will be interesting to see where the trend goes from here on out, since users might need to get used to the new normal or just avoid hiring writers that use AI to any extent whatsoever.
