In a study conducted by PR agency Bospar and Reputation Leaders in March 2023, thought leadership has emerged as the most effective strategy for U.S.-based senior executives to promote themselves and achieve remarkable returns on investment (ROI). An astonishing 97% of respondents firmly believe that thought leadership can elevate their ROI to moderate or high levels, surpassing the average returns offered by the U.S. stock market, which is currently 12.4% lower.

Delving deeper into the study, it becomes evident that thought leadership can be a double-edged sword, as poor planning and inadequate techniques account for 44% of the cases of failure, while a lack of stakeholder buy-in is responsible for 34%.However, the study highlights two often-underestimated tools that can enhance thought leadership success: search engine optimization (SEO) and newsletters. By focusing on these underrated strategies, businesses can reduce the risk of failure and unlock the true potential of thought leadership.

Despite living in a digital era, face-to-face events continue to hold significant sway over promoting thought leadership, with 51% of respondents preferring this traditional approach. However, an intriguing disparity exists between the channels through which business leaders share content and the channels they personally consume thought leadership. While leaders tend to prioritize company website posts and external interviews, they rarely seek thought leadership content through these same channels. The primary motivation behind embracing thought leadership for these businesses lies in its ability to enhance problem-solving skills, according to the study.

Talking about business strategies, Facebook takes the lead when it comes to best social media platform aligned with these strategies, with an overwhelming 73% of respondents endorsing it as the platform of choice. Twitter and LinkedIn follow closely behind, securing 66% and 68% of the vote, respectively. This emphasis on popular social media channels underscores the growing recognition of their power in amplifying thought leadership initiatives.
