AI has been a part of consumer culture for quite a long time now, with apps like Spotify and YouTube regularly using it in order to provide users with better content than might have been the case otherwise. In spite of the fact that this is the case, people still don’t trust AI when it comes to making important decisions on their behalf.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that a recent survey Krista Software conducted by revealed just how little people seem to trust AI as of right now. 67% of the people that responded to this survey stated that they would not trust AI to make decisions during a wartime conflict, and 64% believe that AI is not fit to serve as a replacement for juries in trials. Furthermore, 57% are of the opinion that AI can’t be trusted to fly airplanes either.
Around one thousand Americans were included in this survey, and 86% of them said that they can do their jobs better than AI can. Indeed, the vast majority of respondents felt that humans can do better than AI across a wide range of jobs. 79% said that voting was something that humans would be superior at, 76% stated that humans write better laws, and 75% wouldn’t even rely on AI for something as simple as picking out their outfits for work.
The surprising thing here is not that the majority are not in favor of AI making these decisions. Rather, it is the implication that 36% of Americans would be willing to allow AI to replace juries, and that one out of three Americans would be comfortable if AI were to make decisions during a large scale violent conflict.
The proportion of individuals who are unwilling to trust AI should have been higher because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up leading to dire outcomes. If the current trend persists, AI maybe granted far more power over our day to day lives which could prove to be dangerous in the long run.
