Safari Surpasses Edge to Reclaim Second Most Used Browser Spot

The single most popular browser in the world has been Google Chrome for quite some time now, but in spite of the fact that this is the case the question of who’s in second place is a fair bit more contentious. Apple’s browser Safari has performed well due to it being preinstalled on just about every Apple device out there, but Microsoft Edge managed to surpass it to claim second place last year in a surprising upset that looked like it would shift the balance of power in the browser wars.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Safari has now reclaimed the second spot. This comes from a report released by Statcounter, and it revealed which browsers users have been preferring these days based on all of the statistics.

Unsurprisingly, Chrome held onto the top spot with a firm lead. It is the web browser of choice for 66.13% of all users, with Safari getting second place thanks to its 11.87% share. This has allowed it to overcome its rival Microsoft Edge, which only managed to receive 11% of the total share of web browser users.

Coming in third is the once great Firefox with 5.65%, followed by Opera at 3.09%. Internet Explorer also managed to make an appearance as well, with the obsolete browser being used by 0.55% of users with all things having been considered and taken into account.

One thing that bears mentioning here is that Google Chrome has not seen any changes in its dominance over the browser industry so far. Despite many attempts by its competitors including Microsoft, it does not look like Chrome’s total control over two thirds of all browser users will be going away anytime soon.

However, the new competition between Safari and Edge might force both companies to innovate more than might have been the case otherwise. This will put Google’s own dominance in jeopardy in the near future, and it will be interesting to see what these numbers look like a few years from now by which point the industry will have changed.
