Huawei Claims It Side-Stepped US Sanctions By Designing Its Own Chip Design Tools

The tech giant from China, Huawei is going public about how it sidestepped US sanctions.

The company reported how it has managed to create its own array of breakthrough chip design technology through some incredible tools so that it can be deemed more self-sufficient.

The news comes to us thanks to the firm’s rotating chairman. He says the firm and a few others leading companies in the Chinese nation were joining hands to develop design tools based on electronic chips.

This means it could make semiconductors at around 14 nanometers and more, as unveiled during a recent speech obtained by the country’s leading financial publication called Yicai.

The chairman adds how such endeavors would undergo the process of verification this year and it would enable them to be used effectively. But right now, the company is yet to make any more comments on the high-profile matter or respond publicly to comments that have people in shock.

Meanwhile, if such claims put out by the country’s popular finance outlet do prove to be true, the company would be called out as taking a leading step to reduce reliance on American technology in terms of semiconductors. Moreover, American firms are already seen as dominating in the world of chip design and tools as companies like Cadence Design and Synopsys are making it big.

So as you can imagine, it would be a big deal to see China’s own domestic companies and tech giants set up growing competition against these big American tech giants.

In case you did not know, the news is shocking also because, in 2020, the American capital city of Washington crippled Huawei with the imposition of sanctions. And this meant the company could not make use of chipmaking tools that arose from the US and that severely impacted the country’s tech industry including its flourishing smartphone sector.

As per the chairman’s recently published speech, these new tools were designed to accommodate chips that were 14 nanometers and more. This particular nanometer figure is the size of every individual transistor seen across the tiny chip. And the smaller the size of such transistors, the greater the number of them used for packing into single semiconductors.

Usually, reduced nanometer sizes can produce chips that are more efficient and powerful, as per experts’ opinion. With that being said, let’s not forget how 14 nm-sized chips are actually quite outdated than what is being used in today’s latest endeavors in the world of smartphone technology.
