Apple has managed to position itself as not just the single most successful smartphone company in the world, but also as a platform that acts as an intermediary between app developers and the users that they are trying to cater to. The tech juggernaut is often criticized because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up creating a disproportionate power dynamic, which is why the company expanded its price limitations last year.
In a major change, Apple announced that app developers on the App Store could now choose from price points between 29 cents and $10,000. However, this was initially only meant for apps that charged a regular subscription to consumers, which made it less useful for the average developer than might have been the case otherwise.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Apple just expanded access to this range of price points. Now, any app developer can select from this extremely broad range. Previously, there were only 90 different price points that developers could charge, but that number has now jumped tenfold to 900.
This will give developers a lot more control over the amount of revenue they can generate from their apps with all things having been considered and taken into account. Apple frequently comes under fire for taking a thirty percent cut of all revenue that comes through its App Store platform. This change could do a lot to even the scales, since developers will be able to charge more if they feel like they are not getting enough to be sustainable after Apple takes its share.
This update will be rolled out by the 9th of May, 2023. It will be interesting to see the type of impact it has on the App Store, as well as the app industry in general. Apple has been notoriously resistant to change, but this is a strong indication that it is beginning to realize that the winds are shifting and that it will be left behind if it does not adapt.
