The rise of TikTok has forced a lot of social media platforms to start looking into things like adding video uploading options for the very first time. Pinterest is yet another example of a social media platform that might not have traditionally offered such types of posts, but in spite of the fact that this is the case it has started to offer the option in order to compete against the likes of TikTok.
This is being done through the Idea Pins format, with all of that having been said and now out of the way it is important to note that Pinterest is about to start letting users add longer form videos as well, as spotted by Lindsey Gamble. This is another leaf that Pinterest is taking out of TikTok’s playbook. The rapidly rising social media platform used to be entirely focused on short form content, but the ever present threat of the YouTube behemoth meant that it could only rely on short videos for so long
Users want long form content as well because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing them to get fully immersed in whatever it is that they are watching. Hence, it makes sense that Pinterest is expanding the maximum length of the videos that users can upload to five minutes.
The previous limit was 60 seconds, and even though this new maximum length is not exactly enough for a feature film, it will certainly allow content creators on the platform to dive deeper into the topics that they are discussing than might have been the case otherwise. Users who are looking for such content might be more likely to use Pinterest, and it would certainly become a more appealing option for content creators as well.
However, creators should be wary of focusing too much on long form content. They need to find a balance between the two with all things having been considered and taken into account. That will enable them to target all possible audiences without accidentally alienating any particular group that has a strong preference for one or the other.
