Open AI managed to show up a bunch of major tech companies by releasing Chat GPT. Most tech corporations have been dipping their toes into the world of AI, but in spite of the fact that this is the case Open AI managed to beat them to the bunch and most people are quite impressed by what they have to offer.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Meta’s AI chief Yann LeCun didn’t seem all that impressed with the chatbot. While he admitted that Chat GPT was a decent rendition of what AI could accomplish, he rubbished the notion that it was the least bit revolutionary, instead saying that it was simply a well put together chatbot.
In fact, LeCun went so far as to say that Chat GPT is not all that advanced at all. He pointed to his own employer as well as Google along with a bunch of other startups who are making headway in this field, and according to him they are advancing the tech in ways that Open AI simply isn’t.
Another thing that he mentioned is that a fundamental aspect of Chat GPT, namely the neural nets known as transformers, were literally built by Google. Does that mean that Chat GPT is all hype with nothing of substance?
It should be mentioned that LeCun might have an ulterior motive here. He is trying to suggest that only big tech can advance AI because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up keeping them relevant in the world.
Despite his assertions, it’s not necessarily true that Chat GPT didn’t push the field forward by several steps. However, it’s definitely true that Open AI did not act alone. They built upon infrastructure that had been created by many other researchers and scientists.
Every tech innovation is the byproduct of years of development, and Chat GPT is no different. That doesn’t change how cutting edge it is, but it does show that the industry is bigger than some might think.
