Everyone knows that Elon Musk is the richest man in the world right now, but that wasn’t always the case. Musk only reached the top of the wealth chart this year, and he wasn’t even on the top ten list just a couple of years ago. The people in the list of the richest individuals in the world have changed quite a bit in the previous decade, with many heavyweights who used to be at the top of the rankings exiting the list in that period.
About a decade ago, back in 2013, the richest person in the world was Mexican telecom giant Carlos Slim Helu with a net worth of $73 bilion. Interestingly, he is no longer in the top ten list, although his net worth of $78 billion leaves him eleventh place. Helu was quickly replaced by Bill Gates in 2014 whose wealth increased from $67 billion to $76 billion while Helu’s fell to $72 billion.
The next three years saw Bill Gate at the top of this list, with Carlos Slim falling out of the list by 2019. In spite of the fact that this is the case, 2018 saw a bit of a changing of the guard with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos reached the top spot with a staggering net worth of $118 billion. He entered the top ten list for the first time in 2016 with a net worth of $45 billion, and the subsequent two years saw this wealth more than double with all things having been considered and taken into account.
Bezos also stayed in first place for four years, but with all of that having been said and now out of the way it is important to note that this only lasted until 2021. That is when Musk reached the top spot, with an almost absurd level of wealth that is currently hovering at just under $220 billion. Bezos is in second place, Gates is fourth, and some famous faces such as Mark Zuckerberg have dropped out of the list due to their net worth taking a hit after the recent industry shakeup.
