Elon Musk has been trying to make a lot of changes on Twitter after buying it outright, although the responses to these changes has seemed rather mixed at best. Among his efforts have been a series of tweets that criticized the way that Twitter was run prior to him taking the helm. The latest of these tweets have involved him claiming that child safety was not a priority for Twitter before he took control.
Musk endorsed a link to a news article that claimed that Twitter did not think that videos of child sexual abuse violated the content policies of the platform, and therefore refused to remove them. He also claimed that his new trust and safety chief, Ella Irwin, took these concerns to former CEO Parag Agrawal, as well as ex CFO Ned Segal, she was shot down and that this endangered children by allowing CSA material to thrive on the platform.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Jack Dorsey shot back at Musk, stating that these claims were fake. Musk has yet to provide any proof apart from the year old article, and considering that it came from the New York Post which is known for sensationalized tabloid journalism, this news may be less trustworthy than might have been the case otherwise.
Musk has stated that he is making the protection of children a top priority for his strategy moving forward. In spite of the fact that this is the case, the team that is dedicating to removing CSA material in the Asia-Pacific region only has one member as of right now. Additionally, the Trust and Safety Council has seen three resignations so far, which does not bode well.
Preventing the spread of CSA material is important because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up putting children at risk. However, this problem can’t be resolved with finger pointing, but rather with targeted and collaborative action from all parties that are involved.
