One of Twitter’s top executives has shed light on how the app has recently been receiving a surge in hateful posts across the board.
The news comes just a few days after billionaire and free speech enthusiast Elon Musk took control of the app’s leadership and work.
Not only did he fire the company’s four top executives but he also showed the CEO the door. And now, he’s the firm’s chief. A lot has taken place since his arrival and more layoffs are planned as he tries to make the platform a better and more useful space for all.
But seeing the company report a surge in hateful content after his arrival isn’t the best feeling in the world, especially when you’re starting off things fresh and wish to include more changes.
Twitter’s safety head says Elon Musk is reconsidering the permanent ban clause and is also creating his own content moderation councils to overlook such matters. Musk also promised that he would be overseeing such matters linked to content moderation so that people would now be able to speak their minds without the fear of being banned.
But despite all of these statements, the results aren’t quite where Musk had hoped as the hate keeps coming in against the new CEO. Moreover, Twitter’s head of safety says that he and his team were surprised to see how frequently such content was arising and they’ve been tackling the matter that has been problematic since Saturday.
During this short period, the company has been left with no choice but to actually remove at least 1500 accounts because that’s how hard it was trying to manage the concerns. Such accounts have been tweaked in a manner that has caused their reach to become close to nil.
More details on the matter spoke about how this surge was partly due to a trolling campaign. This is where a lot of bad actors kept on posting repeated content to spread nothing but hate and malice. Hence, they were deleted accordingly.
The news comes at a time when Twitter just restricted its own team of security officers as confirmed by Bloomberg recently from getting access to its internal moderation tools. Therefore, such people can’t block or handle those posting up content on the app anymore.
But the platform’s security says that it’s quite normal for many firms undergoing a transition to behave in this manner. To better put things into perspective, Twitter says 215 racial slurs get reported every second and hence need to be blocked. This was a new peak record for the app.
Meanwhile, a few activists did go into detail about how new threat actors were again experimenting with ways to cause more harm to the app, ever since Elon Musk’s takeover. They were seen sending out tweets about controversial things like homophobia and posts linked to anti-semitic themes too.
Recently, the billionaire owner drew up so much controversy when he posted a so-called conspiracy linked to the recent attack on Speak Nancy Pelosi's husband. And the link he posted was from a webpage that is famous for sharing fake news across the board. So as you can see, it’s a controversial matter altogether.
