Countries can be judged using a wide range of metrics, but perhaps the most useful metric of all is that of innovation because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing the country to have a greater influence on the wider world. Many people assume that the US would top all innovation rankings thanks to its massive economy, but in spite of the fact that this is the case the US ended up being surpassed by Switzerland this year.
According to the latest innovation index released by the World IP Organization, or WIPO for short, Switzerland topped the rankings with a score of 64.6. This actually marks the twelfth year in a row that Switzerland has maintained the top spot on this list, and with all of that having been said and now out of the way it is important to note that the US’s second place score of 61.8 is only just barely higher than Sweden’s 61.6.
South Korea has been making a lot of strides on the innovation front, and the East Asian country has climbed four places to reach the number six spot after having first broken into the top ten back in 2022. China has also seen a lot of progress on this front, reaching the 11th place after being ranked at number 17 in the year of 2019. It climbed up to number 14 in 2020, and is now just within reach of the top ten with its 11th place ranking.
It is also important to mention that China is an upper middle income country, and by that metric its performance is nothing short of spectacular. The second highest ranked upper middle income country is Bulgaria, and it is languishing at the number 35 spot.
Among lower middle income countries, India ranked highest in terms of innovation by coming in at 40th place. Vietnam also does fairly well in this category, reaching the number 48 spot despite having a much smaller economy than that of India with all things having been considered and taken into account.
