Google along with most other major tech companies have been heavily emphasizing optimizing workplace performance because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up giving them a new avenue to explore. The latest experiment that Google is doing on this front is all about bringing holographic projections to the corporate world, and the name of this experiment is Project Starline.
The way this works is that Google is adding panels and fields of lights that can be used to generate holographic representations of people in meetings. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that this can allow people to appear physically present in meetings even if they are working remotely from a far off location. This project was first announced at last year’s Google I/O event, and though Google usually takes a long time to roll out announced projects, the case of Project Starline has been quite different.
According to Google, around one hundred locations already have Project Starline installed. This can allow them to conduct virtual meetings far more immersively than might have been the case otherwise, and they won’t require the use of cumbersome and bulky VR headsets either.
The pandemic necessitated a shift to virtual and video based meetings and chats, and that has resulted in a feeling of alienation that can make collaboration much harder with all things having been considered and taken into account. Project Starline is attempting to take this to another level with its array of cameras and lights, and it gives the impression that you are talking to someone through a window rather than through a screen.
It will be interesting to see if this project takes off. If it does, we might see a whole new field of tech starting to emerge. Google’s competitors including Meta and Apple will be eager to try their own hand in this field, and that will create yet another proverbial arms race between the various major tech corporations that would push the tech into a new era.
