Vacationers Love Nature, But Not Sustainable Travel According to This New Report

Almost every aspect of modern society contributes a net negative to the environment, and the worst offender by far is the tourism industry because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up resulting in massive ecological decay as well as the enormous emissions caused by air travel. Going on vacation is a nice treat for most people that lets them escape the hum drum of their normal lives, so finding sustainable tourism methods is vital.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that a huge chunk of consumers surveyed by Statista don’t seem to realize this. Around 52% of German survey respondents said that they like to be surrounded by nature while they are on vacation, but only 18% think that making tourism more sustainable is something that matters to them.

This trend can be seen across most Western countries, including France, the US and the UK. 45% of French respondents said they enjoyed nature while on vacation, but only 25% agreed that sustainable tourism was important.

The disparity among British and American respondents is less pronounced, but that’s because they have a lower preference for nature oriented vacations with only 36% of American consumers and 33% of British consumers saying they liked to walk among natural beauty while on holiday. The percentage of respondents that agreed that sustainable tourism needed to be worked on was as low as France’s, with 22% and 23% respectively agreeing with this.

In spite of the fact that this is the case, there is a more even matchup between a desire for nature oriented holidays and recognition of the urgency of sustainable tourism among Chinese tourists. 46% of Chinese respondents said that they like to enjoy nature, and 38% agreed that sustainability is something that needs to be worked towards.

Change cannot happen while people live with such privileged and entitled attitudes, since these are the very things that caused the current climate and environmental crisis in the first place.
