The internet of things is a term coined to represent the increasingly interconnected smart devices that people are using at home. Digital assistants like Alexa along with a wide range of appliances that have smart options in their design are all connected through the so called internet of things, and that is something that many experts are warning against. This interconnected nature of common household appliances can be dangerous because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up creating many more vulnerabilities that malicious actors can exploit.
A report that was recently published by SAM Seamless Network revealed that over a billion cyber attacks occurred in 2021. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that around 900 million of these attacks focused on the Internet of Things alone, which reveals just how insecure this new form of technology might be.
In spite of the fact that this is the case, there are plenty of new products being released each year that will become a part of a user’s internet of things with all things having been considered and taken into account. Products like smart TVs, security cameras and several others need to be connected to this system, and that means that users have to start leveling up their cyber security protocols because malicious actors have clearly found that the Internet of Things is a very easy target for them to try to exploit.
Around half of networks that were situated in residential homes or small scale businesses suffered attacks in 2021, and if current trends continue it seems likely that this proportion will vastly increase during 2022. 46% of all attacks targeted routers since they can give a malicious actor access to the entire network instead of just a small part of it, so securing all of these points of vulnerability as well as recognizing them will be increasingly important for consumers as the year continues. Consumers need to be educated about the dangers of connecting all devices within a single network.
