Scientific experts often tend to have educated opinions that not everyone is necessarily going to agree with, and climate change is just one of the many things in which these disagreements might occur. Trusting scientists is generally a good move because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing you to rely on people who have dedicated their whole lives to better understanding things, but regardless of that some people just feel like they know better.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Nature recently conducted a survey of 92 of the scientists who contributed to the recent report released by the UN about climate change. It turns out that 88% of these scientists believe that the world is currently going through some kind of a climate crisis, with only 12% suggesting otherwise. However, another thing to note here is that a survey of regular Americans tells a very different story.
YouGov’s recent survey of a thousand randomly selected Americans showed that only 61% of them believe that climate change is an actual threat, with a rather massive 39% believing that it is not all that great of an issue. 66% of scientists said that they expect to see some kind of catastrophic impact regarding climate change at some point or another within their lifetime, with only 25% of US adults thinking the same.
The opinions of scientists on such matters are generally going to be reliable with all things having been considered and taken into account. However, the main problem lies in the fact that Americans either don’t believe them or are not educated enough to realize the implications of what they are trying to say. This is something that can create huge problems in the long run because the consensus of the average populace is what will end up determining climate policy, and if the current trend continues it is unlikely that any reasonable steps will be taken at all.
