The rise of TikTok has ended up creating a wide range of problems for social media platforms that had previously been soaring in terms of their growth rate. TikTok has upended the status quo in the world of social media, and Instagram has particularly been impacted by this. One way in which Instagram has tried to deal with this new form of competition that it has not been forced to think about previously is through the creation of a new feature called Reels.
Suffice it to say that Reels are little more than Instagram’s own version of the videos that people refer to as TikTok. Meta’s various subsidiaries including both Instagram as well as Facebook itself have long practiced appropriating unique features from other platforms such as Snapchat which found its Stories feature being replicated throughout Facebook’s numerous properties, and Reels is just another example of that starting to occur although it should be noted that it has failed to give TikTok any real kind of competition in that regard.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Instagram is continuing to try to make Reels as close to TikToks as possible. The latest update, as per Alessandro Paluzzi, that is attempting to do that includes a feature that allows you to pin a particular Reel to your profile, something that many TikTok users would already be quite familiar with. At this point Instagram is more or less unabashedly copying TikTok, although it remains to be seen whether or not this will help it keep its head above water in the future.
Another update that some have noticed on Instagram includes the ability to send group invite links, tha will probably remain active for 100 days. This is being implemented in an attempt to create a more community oriented usage case for Instagram, something that Facebook has also recently been trying to do through its Groups feature. Some are criticizing Instagram for taking away the Story Group DM button, and this might be an attempt to provide an alternative in that respect. This rounds out the new features that Instagram users should expect in the near future.
