NewsGuard published its reports in which they stated that out of the 113 websites that were found guilty of spreading misinformation in the 2020 elections, 81% of them are still continuing to actively promote fake news. Moreover, these websites are funded by major brands who are running their digital ads on them. What they don’t see is the fact that these are compromised websites and they shouldn’t be funding them. This means that they were responsible for spreading fake news regarding the election and also about the attack on the capitol.
It has been almost a year now since these problems first surfaced, but we can still identify that many of these websites are still producing elections-related content that is found to be misleading.
892 big brands were identified by NewsGuard that were funding the websites who had released wrong information related to elections or the January 6 attack.
One America News, also known as OAN, is highly in favor of Trump as stated by NewsGuard, also played a huge part in spreading wrong news stories and claiming that the 2020 election was not fair. They also questioned the credibility of the Voting systems. It was also seen that around 102 brands advertised their products on OANs website during the time period of Sept 1 to Dec.1 2021. NewsGuard also mentioned the facts and figures as to how much money these brands spent on the misleading websites. It was seen that around $2.6 billion worth of ads were given to these websites.
