Half of All Ransomware Attacks Target Americans

One of the biggest things that businesses tend to be concerned about is ransomware because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up causing significant financial losses for them as well as diminishing their reputation in their respective industries. Most ransomware attacks are conducted for the purposes of stealing money, but some have been implemented to try and steal government secrets as well which might be even more dangerous.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that almost half of all ransomware attacks conducted in the year 2021 targeted companies and users that were based in America. This comes from research conducted by Cyberint, and it indicates that there is a fair amount of discrepancy with regards to who might get targeted as well as why said individual or corporation ended up being targeted in the first place.

Americans were targeted in around 1,352 ransomware attacks in 2021, and this is ten times more than the country that came in second namely France which saw only 146 attacks. Some might say that this has a lot to do with America’s higher population, but suffice it to say that even if you look at it on a per capita basis, Americans have suffered twice as many ransomware attacks than people in France which indicates that ransomware attackers might perceive it as a lucrative location.

Industrial and energy producing companies were targeted most often, suffering almost 600 of the over 2,800 attacks that occurred in 2021. Retail companies came in second with 545 attacks, and Finance at a distant third with 355 attacks in the same year. These attacks are increasing both in frequency as well as intensity, and they can often cause a lot of problems not just for the companies themselves but for the average person as well all in all.
