There’s no denying in the fact that social media has a lot of influence in determining which app was the best each year, but it’s the public that decides which app would be the most downloaded one. Because you can’t deliberately download an app into a person’s phone, for that they need to push the download button themselves. So without further ado, let's get right into it.
It was seen that there were many applications that were going on for the race of being the top downloaded app of 2021. We saw Facebook, Telegram, WhatsApp, YouTube and TikTok fighting it out as to which one of them would stand victorious. And frankly speaking, no one saw this coming.
As per AppFigures year-end analysis of top Google Play and Apple App Store apps, TikTok was found to be the most downloaded app of 2021, with almost 586 million downloads which was the most in the last 12 months, with Instagram following it on 2nd with 566 million, Facebook with 474 million and WhatsApp with 444 million respectively.
Another report from Senor Tower shows that Consumer spending on applications throughout the world is estimated to reach up to $133 billion this year. This shows a pretty huge curve in the growth as compared to last years graph with almost 20% growth in consumer spending.
Throughout the year in 2021, we saw that TikTok made a revenue of around 2 billion which is around 67% more than what the app made last year.
Coming back to AppFigures stats, Instagram which is one of the most popular platforms among the millennials and Gen Z took the 2nd place on the leaderboard, with the pandemic and all the things that are going around the world, this app was a place where people expressed themselves and felt safe.
Facebook and WhatsApp remained at 3rd and 4th with Instagram also in the top 5, we think it’s safe to say that Meta has a strong grip over the mobile media platforms.
Telegram was seen to be making some great strides this year with being placed in the top 5, with over 500 million active users. For those of us who don’t really know about Telegram, it is a privacy-focused app that is similar to Whatsapp and Signal. You can send photos, videos or any kind of documents alongside regular messages.
Platforms including Snapchat (with 328 million download), Facebook Messenger (322 million downloads), Zoom (309 million downloads), Capcut (223 million installs) and Google Meet (with 210 million installs) were also in the top 10 list. You can find separate lists of top iOS and Android apps in the chart below.
Now it’s time to predict the future of these apps as to which one would be left standing on the top next year as well. We think that Facebook and TikTok might be going neck to neck next year as TikTok is getting a large increase in its users gradually, the VR and the revolutionizing metaverse concept of Facebook is also something that people would be looking out for next year.
