Getting involved with a startup has become increasingly popular over the past decade because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing you to get millions of dollars in funding if you can demonstrate the efficacy of the product or services that you are offering. A unicorn startup is basically any new company that has managed to exceed a billion dollars in its overall valuations, and several startups have managed to achieve this milestone this year, as illustrated by VisualCapitalist in an infographic.
Currently, over 800 startups in the world are classified as unicorns. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that these aren’t the most impressive startups. That honor belongs to decacorns which are basically startups whose valuation has crossed a total of $10 billion. Several of these decacorns are already widely renowned such as Space X due to the reason that it has started to revolutionize space travel in the modern age.
However, while Space X has definitely done well for itself especially now that it has crossed $100 billion in total value, it is not the most prominent startup of the year from that perspective. That honor belongs to ByteDance which is the Chinese company behind TikTok and Douying. TikTok has quickly become the most influential social media platform in the world with its highly addictive and intuitive algorithm and its success in developing countries that most major startups have historically ignored due to their more West-centric financial game plans.
Hence, it should come as no surprise that ByteDance has now managed to attain a valuation of $140 billion which makes it the most successful startup of the year by far. It’s the only Chinese company on the list, but another important thing to note is that this year’s list is not quite as dominated by American companies as startup lists have often been in the past. Only 5 of the top 10 startups of the year are American, with the other five belonging to various different countries all around the world.
Stripe, a financial services company, has gotten close to the coveted $100 billion mark with its $95 billion valuation. It’s the third highest valued startup of the year, and that indicates just how much of a gap there is between the top three and other startups. Klarna, a Swedish startup, got the fourth position on this list with a valuation of just over $45 billion. While that’s impressive, the fintech company is still far away from the much higher valuations of companies ranked above it on this list.
Fintech dominates the list with four out of the top ten belonging to that industry, but gaming has also managed to get an entry as well. Epic Games, creator of Fortnite, managed to get the tenth spot thanks to its $28.7 billion valuation that bodes well for the gaming industry as a whole. Other entries include Brazilian fintech company Nubank at number 9 with $30 billion, and Australia’s Canva at number four with around $40 billion. There is a lot of diversity on this list which indicates that startups are more profitable than ever before.
