Google is Making Bigger Changes to Search Results Than Previous Years

One might assume that the kind of rank that a website has on Google’s SERP is going to stay constant, but with all of that having been said and now out of the way it is important to note that the ranks can go up or down. This happens due to the reason that Google is frequently changing its algorithms up, and tweaking said algorithm in one way or another is important so that Google can ensure that only the highest quality content ends up turning into something that people would end up being genuinely interested in.

However, this year might be different than all the others. Changes in SERP rankings is called rank volatility, and according to the data shared by Mordy Oberstein SEMRush tool this year’s search volatility has been a lot higher than in previous years. If you look at desktop SERPs, it turns out that 2021 saw high rank volatility around 44.58% of the time, and this is something that is far higher than 2020 when desktop SERPs only saw 26.46% days of high volatility.

The numbers are fairly similar for mobile as well with all things having been considered and taken into account. Just about 50% of the time we saw rank volatility on Google, compared to 27.23% in 2020. This is something that has SEO professionals worried because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up making it difficult for them to predict how highly their page might be ranked.

Google needs to be more transparent about the changes that it is making to its algorithm due to the reason that there are a lot of people that depend on their understanding of the algorithm to get the traction that they require. Asking Google for transparency is not something that anyone would likely get though, so the guessing game will probably continue.
