Telegram has been a major contender when it comes to competitors that WhatsApp is going to have to end up dealing with. While the latter of these two apps has managed to become synonymous with text based messaging itself, people often take issue with its parent company Facebook because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up compromising their security. This means that they would be looking for alternatives, and Telegram tends to be the most popular one that they tend to go for.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Telegram just crossed an important milestone. Recently the app was downloaded for the billionth time, thereby joining a select group of apps that have managed to find this level of success, as reported by TC. Nearly a quarter of these downloads, 22% to be precise, have come from India, which means that Telegram is a lot like TikTok in that it is establishing itself in emerging markets rather than tackling developed markets that already have a massive amount of competition going on.
Other countries where Telegram is really popular are Russia and Indonesia who have contributed 10% and 8% of the total number of downloads respectively. This means that 40% of all Telegram users are currently in these three countries, which might pose a bit of a problem because it might indicate that the app lacks appeal in other locales.
However, the fact that Telegram has crossed this milestone means that there is definitely a market for it. The people over at WhatsApp might just take note of this and it has the potential to make them sweat since it means that they don’t have the same kind of monopolistic dominance that they had once been able to take advantage of all in all.
