Chinese brands have long desired the top spot in the world of smartphones, gadgets and the like, but a lot of them have tried and failed to get there. Huawei in particular tried quite hard to become a phone company that people would end up taking really seriously pretty much all around the world, but in spite of the fact that this is the case the company ended up facing far too many obstacles which prevented it from getting the success that it truly desired.
While Huawei’s attempts did not garner it the top spot in the world of mobile phones, a fellow Chinese company has managed to clinch the top spot. This company is Xiaomi, and it is now the biggest phone company in the world surpassing both Samsung as well as Apple, as per CounterPointResearch. Xiaomi has a 17.1% share of the global smartphone market, far surpassing Samsung’s 15.7%. Apple, while being the most valuable brand in the world and inspiring quite a bit of consumer loyalty, comes in third with a somewhat underwhelming 14.3% market share.
This rise to the top is especially impressive when you consider the fact that Xiaomi as a company is only about 10 years old. Over the course of the past 10 years the company has managed to sell 800 million smartphones which is an exceptional feat with all things having been considered and taken into account.
The company saw a massive 26% month on month rise in sales in June which allowed it to clinch the top spot. It should be noted that Huawei’s fall from grace actually did quite a bit to cause Xiaomi to rise a lot more quickly because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up giving Xiaomi access to markets that Huawei had previously been extremely competitive in.
Now, while Xiaomi’s rise is definitely something to be noted, it is by no means permanent. The company might have seen a surprise increase in sales but whether or not it is able to maintain its strong performance is another question entirely. This could just be another example of a company that momentarily managed to shine brightly but was inevitably surpassed once again by more established entities.
Alternatively, Xiaomi might just potentially end up getting the chance to maintain its hold on the smartphone market and become a truly major player, one that will be able to retain the top spot and potentially even change the status quo for a really long time in the future.
