Getting verified on Twitter is a source of prestige for many, but with all of that having been said and now out of the way it is important to note that there are a lot of problems that can often occur during the verification process. For example, it’s quite possible that an account that is posing as a real individual would get verified instead of the individual themselves. Because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up reducing the value of verification, Twitter might start using phone numbers to verify users.
This won’t be restricted to accounts that are verified either. A spokesperson for the platform said that all profiles might get a badge of sorts that would indicate phone number verification. This will definitely be a good way to ensure that no one untoward ends up using the platform, but it can also be a bother for people that desire anonymity with all things having been considered and taken into account. Plenty of people that need to be verified cannot reveal their identity for safety reasons, and this might make it difficult for them to stay anonymous.
There are plenty of examples of people that really shouldn’t be verified due to them not being notable getting the blue tick, whereas plenty of notable and influential have not gotten a blue tick without any explanation. This would definitely solve the issue, but it might cause more problems than it solves. These plans are still in the earliest stages so it might not go anywhere, but many users are going to be nervous about the phone verification badge if it ever comes. It will be interesting to see how users react to this if it ends up being rolled out, as well as what kind of impact it has on how people interact with the platform.
